In the news this month

Just some news that currently holds my interest.  I never feel like talking about the right things, do I?  Oh well…

(from the International Herald Tribune

January 16, 2009 - Crash cause unclear, but not pilot’s heroism
"What might have been a catastrophe in New York was averted by a pilot’s quick thinking and deft maneuvers, and by the nearness of rescue boats, a combination that witnesses and officials called miraculous."  Good news is like hoodies; you can never have too many.

January 04, 2009 - Chinese aim for the Ivy League
"…the preoccupation - some might say a single-minded national obsession - of a growing number of middle-class Chinese parents: getting their children into America’s premier universities."  Makes me want to immolate myself, not out of shame, but rather out of ethical agony.  If you haven’t the background on this topic, please share the story of Bella Jiaqing Zhou with me in "Gilded Age, Gilded Cage" from National Geographic.

January 05, 2009 - The sport of the samurai lives on
"Each year, archers in feudal shooting gear climb on their decorated mounts for a lively competition on the beach of Zushi, a town just south of Tokyo, galloping in the sand as thousands of onlookers cheer and shout."  I dunno ’bout you, but yabusame sounds pretty epic to me. :]

  1. this is good :) I would totally go samurai-ing… love the layout too. The problems is… that basketball manga i was talking about, I hope it doesn’t get canceled by Shonen Jump for not being “popular” enough :(
